Filling & lighting a cold smoke generator: cold smoke basics
A cold smoke spiral works reliably when three things are right: fine, dry smoking dust (grain size 0.5–1.0 mm), pressed down firmly – and an open air supply. The embers then travel slowly through the U-shaped spiral and provide hours of cool smoke for cold smoking. If the cold smoke spiral goes out, it is almost always due to smoking dust that is too coarse or damp, packed too loosely, or a lack of air. The good news: each of these mistakes can be fixed in a minute.

Filling and lighting the cold smoke spiral – step by step
The process takes less than five minutes and is foolproof with a little practice:
- Choose your smoking dust: Fine smoking dust with a grain size of 0.5–1.0 mm (designation 500/1000), absolutely dry. If necessary, dry it in the oven. Coarser dust belongs in the smoke generator, not in the cold smoke spiral.
- Filling: Fill the spiral evenly and press the smoking dust down firmly with your hand – this is the only way to ensure a continuous glowing path.
- Lighting: Create a glowing nest on one side with a blowtorch or windproof lighter and let it burn briefly until it glows reliably (not just flickers).
- Placement: Place the cold smoke spiral in the wooden drawer, open the fresh air supply completely and keep the exhaust open. The embers will now travel through the U and smoke for hours.
Why the wire mesh works: The spiral is made of wire mesh so that oxygen can reach the smoking dust from all sides. The firmly pressed, fine dust thus burns evenly – first at the ignition point, then centimetre by centimetre. A cold smoke spiral can never 'break', is inexpensive and provides reliable smoke with a good draught: the classic cold smoke solution in the smoker.
The difference to the smoke generator: The cold smoke spiral works inside the smoker and needs fine smoking dust; the external smoke generator needs coarser dust to create air pockets and separates the ash from the cooking chamber. Both produce cool smoke – the cold smoke spiral is inexpensive and maintenance-free, the generator is convenient and for large quantities.

Frequently asked questions about the cold smoke spiral
Can I use the cold smoke spiral in any smoker?
Yes – it goes into the wooden drawer or on the floor of the smoking chamber, for both the Smoky and F series. The only important thing is an open air supply to feed the embers.
How much smoking dust fits in a cold smoke spiral?
Depending on the size, one filling lasts for several hours up to a complete cycle of 8–12 hours. A 15 kg bag of RÄUCHERGOLD will therefore cover many cold smoking cycles.
Why does the cold smoke spiral produce white smoke instead of blue?
