Smoky 4, 5 or 6? The beginner series in detail

Beelonia Smoky 5 and Smoky 6 side by side in the showroom

The Smoky series is Beelonia's entry-level class – and the choice is easy, because the three models only differ in height: Smoky 4 (80 cm, approx. 10 fish, from €540.26), Smoky 5 (100 cm, approx. 18 fish, from €630.70) and Smoky 6 (125 cm, approx. 25 fish, from €706.86). Base area (38×50 cm), V2A stainless steel (AISI 304), doors and accessories are identical. Our recommendation right away: For most, the Smoky 5 is the sweet spot – the 6 is worth it for anglers with eel ambitions and anyone who wants to cold smoke.

Reading tip: Whether it should be a Smoky at all – or straight to the double-walled F series – is clarified in the series comparison.

The three Smokys in numbers

Model Height Capacity Dimensions (W×D×H) Price from
Smoky 4 80 cm approx. 10 fish, 3 levels 380×500×800 mm €540.26
Smoky 5 100 cm approx. 18 fish, 3 levels 380×500×1000 mm €630.70
Smoky 6 125 cm approx. 25 fish, 3 levels 380×500×1250 mm €706.86

How is the Smoky built?

At the top the large loading door, at the bottom the wood drawer, in between three support levels for rods and grates – and at the top the infinitely adjustable 130 mm flue. Two details set the series apart from DIY store products: The door is double-walled and insulated – with sufficient draught, no smoke escapes there. And there is always a fat tray above the embers, because fat in the wood embers means an open flame. The practical trick from the Beelonia video: line the tray with aluminium foil or sprinkle it with fine white bird sand – the sand binds the dripping fat immediately, nothing burns on, no black smoke.

Heating of your choice – even later: As standard, the Smoky works with wood. Available as accessories are the gas heating block (4 kW, supplied with hose and pressure reducer for any propane gas cylinder) and the electric heating block (2.5 kW) – €179.69 each, swapped in a simple drawer system: wood drawer out, heating drawer in, smoking dust tray on top. This turns the wood Smoky into a gas or electric smoker in a minute – the Beelonia interchangeable system in the entry-level class.

Cold smoking in the Smoky: With the cold smoke generator (the "smouldering spiral"), the Smoky becomes a cold smoke device: fill in fine smoking dust, press down lightly, ignite on one side with the blowtorch, spiral into the wood drawer, fresh air fully open. The wire mesh allows oxygen to reach the embers from all sides, which wander through the U for hours. The higher the smoker, the cooler the smoke arrives at the top – the Smoky 6 is therefore the cold smoke favourite of the series.

Which Smoky for whom?

Smoky 4 for the balcony and two-person household, Smoky 5 as an all-rounder for the family and fishing weekend, Smoky 6 for eel anglers, cold smoke beginners and anyone who wants reserves. The surcharge from the 4 to the 6 is €166.60 – measured against 15 additional fish per batch and 45 cm more hanging height, the most affordable capacity expansion in the range. Anyone who adds rods, wave grates for lying fish and the large double hooks for fish from 500–600 g is fully equipped.

Frequently asked questions about the Smoky series

Which accessories are included with the Smoky?

Rods and fish hooks are included as standard; slatted grates, wave grates (for lying fish) and base frame (€154.70) are accessories. For heavy fish from 500–600 g, the large double hooks are recommended – so nothing ends up in the fat tray.

Can I operate the Smoky indoors?

Only with a professional connection to a chimney or an exhaust air duct to the outside – never freely in closed rooms. The 130 mm flue takes standard exhaust pipes; for planning, the article Balcony & Garden helps.

Is the Smoky also suitable for ham?

For small pieces (nut ham, sides of bacon) yes – large raw hams need the hanging height of the F series. The Smoky 6 with cold smoke generator manages solid cold smoking sessions; ambitious ham projects are guided to the right technique by the raw ham guide.
